One highlight from my trip to Bruges this summer was visiting the Salvador Dali Museum. Dali is celebrated for his surrealistic paintings, his “art of exaggeration” and love of the bizarre. Less well known, but just as fantastic, are his book illustrations and sculpture.
My favorite was his Alice in Wonderland illustrations. An image of Alice skipping rope is hidden in nearly all the illustrations. See if you can find them.
Other drawings and book illustrations follow, among them from Don Quixote, Aladdin and His Lamp, MacBeth, and the Bible.
His sculptures are just as wild and wonderful.
And all this set in a corner below the famous Bell Tower featured in the equally bizarre and fantastic film In Bruges. No wonder my whole visit there felt surreal.

Thanks for this. I never knew of these works. Inspired! I was able to see just a few of Dali’s works in New Haven Connecticut. I often wonder (do you?) what a conversation would’ve been like one on one.
I was surprised too by some of these works. He was a very strange but brilliant man. I imagine a conversation with him might be like going down that rabbit hole!
My daughter copied Dahli’s work in her HS art class. I feared she was on drugs until I took her to the museum in St Pete FL. The was one disturbed man…until I viewed his Discovery of America and The Council. A lot of transition from one form to the final form.
I will have to check out those paintings. He had so many influences and created such a variety of artwork
One of my favorites. So poetic with his images. 🙂
They are poetic, aren’t they? And so lively! I love his energetic drawings of horses, a maze of spiralling lines..
I have to take another look at the horses. 🙂
I got to see his collection in Florida; so good in real life.
I went clear to Europe to see the artworks of so many I admire, when so much can be found right here in the states. Now I’d like to make a pilgrimage to all the great art museums right here at home.
Sounds like my kind of adventure! My husband and I went to Seattle this summer and feasted on art. A great city packed with museums!
